The Magic of Snail Mail

This year I set a goal to send 1 letter a week in 2026.

We're halfway through the year — how am I doing?

I've sent 28 letters as of this week. Twenty-eight down, twenty-four to go.

So far I've sent all kinds: New Year's cards, birthday cards, congrats, thank-yous, and most importantly for this goal, the "just because" letters. Just because I heard a song that reminded me of you. Just because I started running and I know you're a runner too.

Why?

I love snail mail. I've had pen pals off and on for years, and since my move last year, I have friends and family scattered across the country. I wanted a fun way to keep in touch with people and frankly, I'm terrible at texting and calling.

What?

I used to put way too much into a single letter. Now it's a single topic.
Summer.

Art.

What I'm looking forward to.

A new album I'm loving.

Thoughts on AI.

Meeting a new neighbor.

There's something about writing a letter that changes how I express myself. It invites a more philosophical reflection on my life, a chance to offer someone a peek into my world.

Only 2 people have responded back via letter.

New as of May: I've started adding art to my cards. I've been doing more ink drawings, and now I put them right on the folded cards for an extra personal touch. It's also helping me practice intentionally, since it gives me a reason to make one card a week.

Twenty-eight down, twenty-four to go.

There's a particular kind of joy in opening a mailbox and finding something that isn't a bill. If you've been meaning to write someone (a friend you've lost touch with, someone you're thinking about, someone who'd never expect it )this is your sign. Grab a card. Send it just because.
